Ukraine is turning to Mozambique for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as ongoing tensions involving Iran strain its energy supply.

Following discussions with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the two nations see mutual benefit in closer cooperation.

Ukraine is seeking alternative gas sources, while Mozambique currently facing an Islamist insurgency is interested in Ukraine’s security expertise.

Mozambique is rapidly emerging as a major player in the global gas market, driven by the revival of its large-scale LNG project led by TotalEnergies, which is expected to produce up to 13 million tonnes annually. For Ukraine, the move is part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on Russian gas, which it has not imported since 2015.
